The ION Network is the first truly state wide fiber network in New York. The network is comprised of four (4) geographically diverse and interconnected SONET rings, and uses dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) for additional capacity. The network has been assembled using ION constructed and owned fiber, ION owner company fiber, and third party leased fiber equaling 2200 plus miles in total. The network has OC-48/OC-192 capacity or 2.5/10Gbps transport capability, and in conjunction with DWDM technology will have the capability of up to 40 wavelengths of either OC-48/2.5 Gbps or OC-192/10Gbps.

ION has deployed both Cisco Equipment (ONS 15454) and ADVA(Movaz) Equipment throughout it’s network. This equipment allows ION to provision circuits starting at the DS-1 (1.544M) level all the way up to the OC-192 (10G) level.

In addition, the network also has presence in a number of the major carrier hotels in the state, which allows ION to connect to a large population of domestic and international carriers. It is these points of presence, that permits ION to forge it’s carrier neutral approach.

What truly sets ION apart from all the carriers operating networks in New York State is the rural reach of the Network. The network’s rural emphasis is based on the fact that ION was founded on the vision and investment of the affiliates of fifteen (15) Independent Telephone service providers (ILEC’s), who have been supporting customers in rural upstate for over 1300 years collectively.
